Gaming keypads such as Logitech G13 are much cheaper, even when they supposedly have more complex hardware (many more keys, LCD display, arm rest, etc. It is much flatter in comparison to the n52 and was under the impression that it would feel awkward or something. The palm rest is textured nicely and the flatter design is more in tune with how my hand wants to naturally rest. In terms of location and distance, it sat exactly where my thumb wanted to sit. So, this post isn’t so much a review as it is a semi-comparison to the n52. If the keys on the G13 are of the same make as Logitech’s gaming keyboard line then I shouldn’t have any problems. You can pretty much transfer your entire n52 layout over button for button with leftovers (the G13 has way more bindable keys). The first things that you might notice about the G13 are its size and weight. In the top two rows, four buttons with indents act as the WASD buttons by default. Why is the Logitech G13 so expensive? Add in the M1 to M3 toggles and this number goes up to a staggering 87 keys for any single game or application. This is an even greater shame considering Saitek’s Cyborg Command Unit, which has been on the market for a while now, offers a full analog thumb stick that can even be mapped to act as a mouse. The first column of keys on the n52 are slightly lower (along the horizontal axis) than the other 4 columns, which makes sense seeing as how most human left hands have pinkies that are shorter than the other 4 fingers. So in order to activate my map, all I need to do is press both G23 and G11 at the same time. At the peripheral’s top we have what differentiates it most from other gamepads: an LCD screen (referred to as a GamePanel by Logitech) with its own set of controls below it. Even the smallest X-Keys cost about $100, and so do Fentek reprogrammable keyboards, and the smallest Optimus mini-keypads (if you can still find them). The only exception are the M-keys, which are always backlit and only in red. But that aside, the computer peripheral itch hit me once again so here I am, with yet another gamepad: The Logitech G13. Using the supplied software, the G1 to G22 keys, backlight control button and GamePanel can be lit in any colour you like, and made just as bright or dim as you want.
When my WoW profile is set to M2, the G11 key will activate the map. Not so much. These consist of five small but easy-to-use rubberized buttons. Quite aside from the luxury look and feel, LCD screen and multicoloured backlighting, for those wanting lots of buttons there simply is no other choice. The four directions of the thumb-stick each act as a programmable key and the stick itself can be pressed down, which combined with the two thumb buttons and 22 G-keys gives the G13 29 fully programmable keys as is. Just above the G13’s padded wrist-rest to the right is a small stick like you might find on a joypad, with two large grey buttons for your thumb just beside it. Hasn't been in production for a while, yet there is still some demand for it. In Call of Duty 4 though, because of the way the G-keys are all packed together rather than the more staggered and divided layout of, say, the Cyborg Command Unit, I frequently found myself pressing the wrong key in a hectic firefight. With the GamePanel set to ‘CountDown Timer’ mode, for example, they allow you to stop/start or reset a pre-configurable stopwatch and countdown. After binding every single ability and overcoming the learning curve, there was a notable improvement in my performance and reaction time. I find the gamepad comfortable with my average sized chick hands, though I do have to awkwardly stretch my fingers over to hit the G1, G7, G8 and G14 keys. The G13 is a bit expensive for what it is, but that’s just the way it is with gaming peripherals, or so it seems.
The comfortably-sloped wrist rest is padded with a soft rubbery material which provides excellent grip, though if we’re being incredibly picky for those with bigger hands the ‘slippery’ silver Logitech inset is not placed ideally.
I never found the stick to work very well for movement, so I usually just used the WASD equivalents, but maybe others had better luck with it.

In terms of build quality, I have always been very pleased with Logitech’s peripherals.The G13 is no exception: it is a very well constructed and solid device. Even in addition to a normal keyboard, it’s highly recommended for anyone who uses lots of complex shortcuts or regularly performs actions requiring repeated sets of key-presses. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for the menu bar controlling profiles, which can be a little confusing and feels more haphazard.
