Towards the end of the novel Equality will tell... ...Near the end of the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand the main character, Equality, reaches one of the most important realizations of the entire book about the concept of individualism. Adam on the other hand, was condemned for obtaining knowledge, although he did not seek it. Technology was very limited and primitive because it is implied that the council carefully planned what things were going to be invented. After their schooling, Equality 7-2521 were sent to the "Home of the Street Sweepers" and there they were assigned a certain sector of the city to keep clean. The advancement of technology and new knowledge are positive for the best interests of society. In the novella Anthem, Ayn Rand promotes her vision of human nature by creating a society in which Individualism is a sin. ...It is very difficult to be able to advance in life if you are not allowed to think freely and become an individual. This set him apart from the others. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Pg 19). individuality are very important in the novel. Anthem, Rand’s dystopian novella, is about us, and about what will happen if we do not follow alongside Equality 7-2521 and Liberty 5-3000 in their discovery of the importance of individualism. Ayn Rand’s inherent opposition to the collectivism of her Russian upbringing greatly influenced the overall plot structure and context of her novel, Anthem. Equality 7-2521's own name is ironic. She was the oldest of three sisters and her father, Ayn Rand's Anthem In his life before he had essentially been living as a slave, forced to “sweat and toil” for others and never allowed to have possessions of his own. I interpreted that if only one man did or created something, it is perceived as wrong and evil and that if one man does not agree with the whole group decision, the whole group has to leave or dismiss the decision/ doing. A collective made all the decisions, but the public were not part of this decision. All three of the listed quotes work as a trio to sing that We; as society, works to defeat individuality. It is true that all the quotes work as one, but at the same time they have their own individualism, Ayn Rand was truly a remarkable woman and accomplished an astonishing feat throughout her career and her philosophy continues to affect many people’s lives.
