Sacajawea's east face is a massive slab of layered marble from the Martin Bridge Formation. The parallel lines in this photo represent bedding planes, or "contacts" between successive layers of rock which were deposited on top of one another, with the younger strata deposited on top of the previous (older) rock layer. These types of fossils are known as stromatoporoids (the root "stroma" means layered), and are interpreted as the remains of calcareous sponges--the dominant reef-builders in the Devonian. For years, the Matterhorn was posted on Oregon maps as around 10,000 feet and now, because of the rules of prominence, it is no longer considered a separate summit at all. Material is transported down the headwall, forming levees as material moves towards the sides of the flow. Continue along the road for another three miles to the final parking lot. The folding exhibited in the photo in the Lodgepole Limestone is known as chevron folding and was produced by compressional stress associated with mountain building events. It’s a classic hike for locals and surprisingly the easiest peak to bag in the Bridgers making it perfect for beginner alpine adventurers. 1989. This route is not recommended for those without climbing experience. Ascend the standard Mt. Moving up the trail near treeline just below the cirque. Solifluction occurs in a saturated soil on top of a relatively non-porous layer. Another layer of algae then starts to grow on top of the previous dead layer. It’s a classic hike for locals and surprisingly the easiest peak to bag in the Bridgers making it perfect for beginner alpine adventurers. Start at Fairy Lake or the M, depending on where you want to finish up, and get ready for heady views and stunning summits. These deposits can be seen along Bridger Canyon Drive, and in fact, cover most of Montana to the east. You can "read" this history in the rock record if you know what you're looking for. Sacajawea Peak is now listed as the highest summit in the Wallowas and sixth highest mountain in Oregon. To the west is the Corbly Gulch Trail, to the north an unofficial trail leads to Pomp Peak and Hardscrabble Peak, and to the south is the trail leading to Sac. The lower areas next to these areas are less resistant to weathering. Photo by Travis Corthouts. But the views are stunning at any time of day, as long as the air is clear. A truly amazing place. If you want to see the Gallatin Valley spread beneath you while you hike, you could also choose to come from the west, taking Corby Creek Trail or North Cottonwood Creek Trail up the east-facing side of the range. The sedimentary rocks that once must have been deposited horizontally are now nearly vertical--requiring mountain building events to have occurred sometime after the time of deposition. Photo by Donald Bent. I didn't think too much of it until it was too late. View of the Gallatin Valley to the west, taken just below the summit. Just a short distance beyond the saddle the Bridger Foothills trail splits off leading along the side of the ridge and continuing all the way to the M. Just after the split the scramble up Sac begins. The Bridger Range is underlain by an east-verging system of thrust faults that have been modified by reverse faults of moderate to steep dip (just west of the ridgeline). Stromatolites record some of the most ancient life forms on earth, and evidence exists that stromatolites formed as far back as 3.5 billion years ago. [1] Matterhorn, another peak in the Wallowa Mountains, is about the same height at Sacajawea Peak, and some sources claim it is actually slightly higher. Mountain goats can be seen from the summit and golden-mantled ground squirrels live here, too. Material on this page is offered under a Directions to the trail head from Bozeman are fairly simple: Starting in downtown Bozeman at Main Street and Rouse Avenue, head north on Rouse Avenue (state Highway 86). In fact, its believed that cyanobacteria are responsible for oxygenating our atmosphere, as they are some of the first known photosynthesizing organisms. Photo by Travis Corthouts. A water pump near the parking lot provides some of the tastiest, most refreshing groundwater I’ve ever had and was a great way to wrap up the day. There’s a campground, picnic area, and a trail that loops around the lake. Photo by Travis Corthouts. basement-cored faulting. This type of faulting is known as Laramide-style faults, and is somewhat younger than Sevier-style faulting in this area (Paleocene - Eocene). These brachiopod shells were part of a reef complex which was preserved in the rock record as fossils in limestone. The remainder of the trail takes you through more Mississippian limestone, mostly the Lodgepole Limestone, although at the saddle exists a contact between Mississippian and Devonian (and older) age rocks to the west. Speaking of which, on the lookout for these nimble critters – not to mention wildflowers, fascinating geology, and other wildlife living above the treeline. As the trail steepens and begins to switchback, you will notice an increasing number of rock outcrops, and you will be mostly walking up the "dip slope" of tilted beds of limestone. Whether you are coming for an adventure, or just passing through, we have eight properties in Gardiner, Livingston, Bozeman, and Bigfork to help you feel at home while you are on the road. Photo by Travis Corthouts. You don't need four wheel drive to make the trip, but take your time driving to the trailhead. Fairy Lake Rd is a dirt road and and can be a bit bumpy and slick in wet weather. (This is also the start of the famous Bridger Ridge Run). Another example of pro-talus ramparts on the west side of the Bridger Range. Nature's Course. Photo by David Mogk, November 2009. Photo by Travis Corthouts. The trailhead for Sacajawea is right near the parking lot and can’t be missed. Hiking info, trail maps, and 10 trip reports from Sacajawea Peak (9,838 ft) in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon 1. Here is an overview of the geologic history of the Bridger Range, summarized from Lageson (1989): Let us know if you took the hike to Sacagawea Peak, and if you used this Field Guide. Within these rock formations are a plethora of invertebrate fossils (corals, brachiopods, crinoids, bryozoans) which can be found along the trail all the way to the summit. This picture was taken on the trail near treeline just before entering the cirque basin. This is a summit with no scrambling required, but standing at its rocky summit is sure to make you feel like a mountain goat. Photo by Travis Corthouts. This is where the Pass Fault resides. It’s a fun little scramble and there’re plenty of switchbacks to ease the pain. View from the saddle to the southwest to the contact between the Cambrian Flathead Sandstone and the Proterozoic LaHood Formation of the Belt Supergroup. While hiking below treeline there are some things of geologic significance to watch for.
